Manchmal hat man es mit Lebensläufen zu tun, die nicht nur eine Geschichte über den Menschen erzählen, sondern komplette Sammlungen an politischen,kulturellen und philosophischen Abhandlungen füllen würden. Ein Künstler mit genau solch einem interessanten und bewegenden Background beehrt Berlin am 22.03.2010.

Sein Name K`NAAN ist vielleicht dem einen oder anderen geläufig, zumindest findet die etablierte Musikwelt immer mehr Gefallen an seinem ausserordentlichen Talent.

Aufgewachsen in Somalia in einem national bekannten lyrischen und sehr musikalischen Elternhaus musste die Familie in den Wirren des Bürgerkriegs mit der letzten Maschine das Land verlassen und sich erst im Schmelztiegel New Yorks und dann später Torontos mit den Grundregeln der „freien Welt“ anfreunden.

Das kann schon mal heissen, das man seinen Englischunterricht durch die bekannten „Pädagogen“ Eric. B & Rakim erhält und aus den Reflektionen ihres Albums „Paid and Full“ Rückschlüsse für seinen eigenen Werdegang zieht. Durchgeboxt in Open Mic Sessions in Toronto bis hin zu den ersten Awards ist die dabei entstandene musikalische Mischung aus Folk, Reggae, Pop, Funk, Soul, Spoken Word und (selbstverständlich) HipHop auf größte Aufmerksamkeit gestossen.

Sein Album „ Troubadour“ vereint Mos Def, Damien Marley, Kirk Hammet (Metallica) und Adam Levine (Maroon 5 ) und erscheint hierzlande im Juni. Die Single „Waving Flag“ ist der offizielle Titelsong der Coca Cola Kampagne zur Fussball-Weltmeisterschaft.

Spin Magazine und Source jubeln und stimmen Lobeshymnen auf K`NAAN an. Er bleibt auf dem Boden und engagiert sich trotz des Erfolgs und gerade deshalb für diverse Charity Projekte (UNO Messenger of Truth,War Child Canada, Global Peace Initiative)

Fragt man K’naan abschließend, was er machen würde, wenn er nicht Musiker geworden wäre, antwortet er: „Ich wäre ein manisch-depressiver Fall. Das kannst du mir glauben – ich habe es ausprobiert.“

José James, Anfang der 80er Jahre in Minneapolis geboren, entdeckte schon während der Highschool sein musikalisches Interesse. Seine Faszination galt der damals angesagten HipHop Generation, was man auch heute noch in seinen Songs hören kann. 

Auf seine Passion - dem Jazz - stößt er allerdings, als er zum ersten Mal mit John Coltranes „Equinox“ in Berührung kam und diesem Song verfiel: ”Als ich “Equinox” hörte, hat es mich umgehauen und ich fing an, Texte dazu zu schreiben. Ich muss das Stück mindestens 2000 Mal gehört haben!”

Nach der Highschool erhielt er ein Teilstipendium, wählte den Weg einer klassischen Ausbildung und studierte an der „New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music“ wo auch sein Debütalbum „The Dreamer“ (2008) entstand.

„The Dreamer“, das in der weltweiten Jazzszene wahre Begeisterungsstürme hervorrief, machte José James zu einem der angesagtesten Jazzsänger seiner Generation und wurde unter die 21 besten Jazzalben 2008 im JazzTimes Magazin gewählt. Seine Kombination aus Soul, Hip-Hop und Jazzgesang inspiriert von Billie Holiday, Marvin Gaye und Gil Scott-Heron macht die gewisse Mischung aus, die sowohl ein junges wie auch ein reifes Publikum anspricht.

An den Erfolg seines ersten Albums knüpft er nun an und wird Anfang 2010 sein neues Werk „Blackmagic“ veröffentlichen. Inspiriert dazu wurde José James durch die Szenen und Bekanntschaften aus über 30 Ländern, die er seit seiner Entdeckung bereisen durfte und eine Vielzahl an erstklassigen Co-Produzenten (darunter Flying Lotus, Moodyman und DJ Mitsu The Beats) gaben sich ein Stelldichein, um dem Album den letzten Feinschliff zu geben.

One of these early offerings, Eternal Sunshine – featuring lyrics on love and religion cascading over the beat-free soundscape of the Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind film score – especially helped to distinguish Jay from the hip-hop herd. In addition to songwriting and rapping, Jay’s skills also extend to production and lead to him crafting the opening track for Nas’s most recent Untitled album.
