Deadline Hollywood are reporting that Joel Silver’s Dark Castle label is about to close a a very interesting distribution deal with Warner Bros.  It seems Vincenzo Natali’s sci-fi flickSplice won them over at the Sundance Film Festival, with Warner Bros. now looking to give the indie film a huge 3000 screen summer release.

Although billed as a horror flick, Splice is really a kind of Frankenstein story that explores the notion of playing God through genetics. It follows two young scientists who defy legal and ethical boundaries by splicing together human and animal DNA to creature, named “Dren”, which rapidly develops from a deformed female infant into a beautiful but dangerous winged human-chimera. When their work is threatened to be shut down, things begin to go very wrong as the bond between Dren and her creators turns deadly.

The cast includes Sarah Polley(Elsa) and Adrian Brody (Clive) as the two young scientists, and notably includes David Hewlett (aka Dr. McKay of Stargate: Atlantis fame).

If the deal goes ahead, Splice might very well be the next Paranormal Activity in terms of coming out of nowhere to enjoy major success, although I should add that Natali’s film is a way more sophisticated production than Paranormal Activity and carries a much bigger budget ($26M vs $11K).  Word is Warner Bros. plan to pour anything from $25M to $40M into promotion so if the deal goes ahead you’re going to be seeing plenty of advertising for Splice.

All in all the film is meant to be a bit crazy but the majority of people who have seen it at festivals seem to think it’s great (it’s currently riding at 8.2 on the IMDB). All of the promo material issued so far looks great so this news looks like being good for sci-fi film fans. You can watch some of that promo material below:
